It's just that creating a convincing X-drum configuration is a pain in the butt, and frankly, that shouldn't even be necessary for a nice basic kit with good sounding cymbals. That's a fact.Ĭ&V definitely has better cymbal recordings, or maybe they're just heavier cymbals, I can't tell. But every once in a while, I play something a little softer, and the right (soft) dynamic cymbal sound simply isn't there. It's not something I notice all the time, because for the most part I play rock and they fit right in. They sound great, but the dynamic range definitely leaves something to be desired. Toontrack does pretty much everything right when it comes to VSTs, so why do the cymbals have to blow chunks?ĭon't get me wrong, I'm not *hating* them, I just think that compared to the snares and kicks and toms, they almost seem like an afterthought. Again, it's the cymbals that are killing me. Still, at $179, I think this is at least $80 too expensive.

I'm going to have to spend some serious time creating X-Drums for the cymbals (combining stuff from C&V) to get something that is passable, but there's enough variety in the snares, toms and kick department to make this work.

Overall, I think this is a good (not great) addition to my arsenal. Too bad you can't realistically add drums from other SDXs into these rooms! That alone is worth the price of admission (somewhat, see below). The Rooms! Turn up the room microphones and the sounds you get from the Allaire studio and the Hit Factory are beautiful. The Good: Snares! Tons of snare drums in his SDX and most of them are beautiful. At least for the kind of music that I am into. I know these are just for showing off what you can do with the software, and that's what they do, but they're beyond useless for actual recording. Give me the same cymbal, with proper articulations and dynamics.Īlso bad: the combined presets. I don't want two different cymbals on bow and edge.

I like what my TD-4 module does: combine bow and edge sounds for a single cymbal pad. Why do all the cymbals need to sound like they're being hit with a ****en sledgehammer? That's just stupid. Toontrack really needs to step up to the plate on this one. Not enough dynamics, and in this case, not even enough cymbals. Spent a good four hours with the new SDX and here's my preliminary review. I have no need for a "jazz" kit or a "twisted" kit: I can create those easily myself from Avatar if I wanted to. I'm not down with Toontrack's pre-procesing, or their presets, for that matter, so I'd rather get a kit that I can tweak. So I splurged on getting the Lost New York Studios SDX.
